Social Media Comes to the Rescue of a Devastated Filipino Nation
It has been two weeks since the wrath of Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) which devastated the Philippines and while many able bodies were being thanked for their aid and support, the world of blogging and social media deserves a pat on the back as well. With phone lines down and the lack of networks to get some help to thousands of people who were trapped in flooded and calamity-riddled areas, social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace were the mediums used to send messages to the rescue teams spread all over the metropolis.
Now while the people who posted and did their share of passing the word out also deserve some credit, you also have to give due recognition to companies like the Philippine Long Distance Telecommunications Company (DSL), Manila Electic Company and telecoms (MMS and Broadband Internet) that were up like Globe, Smart and Sun for making it all work. Without them, there was no way those posts would have been up.
The power of social media has been seen and it looks like it will continue to grow. Thank God for technology and the Internet!
